On 1 January 1940, in conditions of great secrecy, Grace Topp gives birth to two boys. There is something very unusual about them. One of these boys, christened Peter, is brought up by the well-to-do Ernest Marshwood and his wife as their own son. The other boy, Eddie, is cared for by Grace’s working-class parents.
As they grow up, in the same town, the two boys come to know each other – but they are certainly not friends. In their teenage years, Eddie’s girlfriend is Myrtle, the daughter of a cleaning-lady; Peter’s choice is Jennifer, daughter of a solicitor. But each girl finds herself involved with her boyfriend’s rival.
Neither Eddie nor Peter, Myrtle nor Jennifer, knows the truth about the birth of Grace’s boys. But, in the background, there are some who do.
