Avebury in England is the site of perhaps the most impressive prehistoric monument in the world: a huge stone circle, some 400 yards in diameter. First built about 4,500 years ago, Avebury has been said to be a cathedral when compared to the ‘parish church’ at Stonehenge, 17 miles to the south.
